Escalation of error catastrophe for enzymatic self-replicators

چکیده
It is a long-standing question in origin-of-life research whether the information content of replicating molecules can be maintained in the presence of replication errors. Extending standard quasispecies models of non-enzymatic replication, we analyze highly specific enzymatic self-replication mediated through an otherwise neutral recognition region, which leads to frequency-dependent replication rates. We find a significant reduction of the maximally tolerable error rate, because the replication rate of the fittest molecules decreases with the fraction of functional enzymes. Our analysis is extended to hypercyclic couplings as an example for catalytic

Nonequilibrium phase transitions associated with DNA replication.
Thermodynamics governing the synthesis of DNA and RNA strands under a template is considered analytically and applied to the population dynamics of competing replicators. We find a nonequilibrium phase transition for high values of polymerase fidelity in a single replicator, where the two phases correspond to stationary states with higher elongation velocity and lower error rate than the other....
متن کاملCooperation in an All-RNA Network
The discovery of catalytic RNA molecules (ribozymes) capable of catalyzing a significant number of diverse chemical reactions suggests that an RNA world preceded the DNA-RNA-Protein world we know today. The self-replication of RNA molecules would be the central process of the RNA world. However, a single selfreplicating RNA would not sustain information on its own if it surpassed the “error thre...
متن کاملContingencies to Prevent Catastrophe: Behavioral Psychology and the Anti-Nuclear Arms Movement
An active public strongly opposed to the nuclear arms race may offer the best hope to prevent weapons escalation and thereby decrease the risk of nuclear war. In spite of Marxist interpretations to the contrary, this paper argues that the peace movement is necessary and potentially powerful in creating social change. Some possible applications of behavioral psychology to the peace movement are ...
متن کاملThe elongation catastrophe in physical self-replicators
An insufficiently appreciated paradox in the origin of life is that the replication of information-carrying molecules requires the molecules to be very specifically shaped; but such specific molecules are hard to produce without natural selection. We demonstrate and investigate this problem by building a physical model of self-replication out of specifically shaped plastic pieces with embedded ...
متن کاملSurvival of the pre-fittest: Commentary to N. Takeuchi and P. Hogeweg review article "Evolutionary dynamics of RNA-like replicator systems: A bioinformatic approach to the origin of life".
We review computational studies on prebiotic evolution, focusing on informatic processes in RNA-like replicator systems. In particular, we consider the following processes: the maintenance of information by replicators with and without interactions, the acquisition of information by replicators having a complex genotype-phenotype map, the generation of information by replicators having a comple...
